Re-Enter the Dragon: Spyro Returns
Today Activision announced after a week of teases, including a new Spyro twitter account and purple eggs sent to games media with the note “Something’s about to hatch,” with it, that Spyro will be joining the ranks of the other remastered classics we’ve seen lately. Spyro: Reignited Trilogy will release in September 21st this year for PS4 and Xbox One and will include Spyro the Dragon, Spyro 2: Ripto’s Rage, and Spyro: Year of the Dragon. The updated art breathes some fresh air into the games and the soundtrack will be a reimagined version of the originals.
While Activision did officially announce the trilogy today, it got an early leak this morning from none other than Amazon. This seems to be on trend for Amazon as they posted Wolfenstein 2: The New Order’s October 27th release date the day before it’s reveal during Bethesda’s 2017 E3 presentation and put up placeholder images for new Nintendo Switch games ahead of the Nintendo Direct where they were to be announced.
It’s good to see Spyro getting the remaster treatment it deserves, even if it had to be after the Crash Bandicoot: N-Sane Trilogy and Banjo-Kazooie’s spiritual successor Yooka-Laylee. While Spyro has been present in Skylanders since 2011, we have not received a solo Spyro game since the PS1 era.
I, for one, cannot wait to hang out with my favorite spunky dragon again. Fun gameplay, exasperated elder dragons, and Spyro’s bratty sarcastic personality always cemented him as my favorite amongst the older classics.
